Southern Lights on the Mornington Peninsula

Best viewing spots, how to check the forecast, and Cape Schanck safety tips

If your socials have been packed with glowing pink skies lately, you’re not imagining it — the Aurora Australis (Southern Lights) has been putting on a show, and the Mornington Peninsula has been one of the most popular places to try your luck. Crowds have been huge at Cape Schanck, Portsea and Flinders, and there was even a serious incident at Cape Schanck during peak viewing, with a man taken to hospital after a cliff fall.

This guide is the practical, local version: where to go, how to check if it’s worth heading out, and how to stay safe.

What causes the Southern Lights?

The aurora happens when charged particles from the Sun interact with Earth’s upper atmosphere, creating visible light. It’s more likely during periods of stronger solar activity and geomagnetic conditions.

How to know if tonight is worth it (2-minute check)

Before you drive anywhere, do these quick checks:

  1. BOM Space Weather – Aurora page / outlooks
The Bureau of Meteorology’s space weather service posts aurora outlooks and tools that help you gauge whether visibility is likely.

  2. Auroral Oval Prediction Tool + K-index basics
Higher geomagnetic activity (K-index) generally increases your odds of seeing aurora at lower latitudes like Victoria. The BOM tools explain how this works and show predicted visibility lines.

  3. Local conditions
Even with a strong event, you still need:

  • clear skies

  • low light pollution

  • an open view to the southern horizon

Best places to watch the Southern Lights on the Mornington Peninsula

You’re looking for dark areas with a clean view south (over Bass Strait). A few reliable Peninsula options often mentioned by local photographers and travel guides:

1) Cape Schanck (boardwalk areas)

Cape Schanck is a favourite because it faces the right direction and has dramatic coastline — but it also draws big crowds when aurora conditions are strong.

2) Flinders (Ocean Beach area)

Good southern exposure and usually less “bottlenecked” than Cape Schanck on busy nights.

3) Point Leo Lookout

Easy access and a wide southern view — a solid option if you want something simpler than cliff-adjacent spots.

4) Somers / Balnarring beaches

Often quieter, with open views. (Even if it’s not obvious to the naked eye, your phone camera can pick up colour.)

5) Rye Ocean Beach / Gunnamatta (weather permitting)

These can work well for southern views, but conditions can be rough — choose safe, accessible areas.

Cape Schanck safety: please read this before you go

Cape Schanck is stunning — and dangerous at night if people step off paths or get close to edges. During the recent aurora crowds, emergency services responded after a cliff fall and the injured person was taken to hospital.

If you’re heading out:

  • Stay on official tracks and boardwalks

  • Don’t climb fences or approach cliff edges in the dark

  • Bring a torch/headlamp and keep your hands free

  • Arrive early and leave calmly (parking and congestion can get hectic)

  • If you’re unsure about conditions, check park updates and alerts before you go

What to bring (simple checklist)Torch/headlamp + spare battery

  • Warm layers (it feels colder on the coast at night)

  • Fully charged phone + car charger

  • Tripod (optional, but makes a big difference for photos)

  • Water and a snack

  • A plan B spot in case it’s crowded

Quick phone photo settings (easy wins)

If you can’t see much with your eyes, your phone might still capture it.

Try:

  • Night mode ON

  • Hold still (or lean on the car / use a tripod)

  • Point camera south over the water

  • Take a few shots over 5–15 minutes (aurora can “pulse”)

A local note for downsizers

One of the underrated perks of Peninsula living is how quickly you can get to open coastline, beaches, and dark-sky pockets — even mid-week. If that lifestyle matters to you (walkability, low-maintenance living, and staying close to family), it’s worth factoring those “after-dark” experiences into where you choose to move next.
