A Winter Ferry Ride from Sorrento to Queenscliff — This One’s Worth Doing
You know those winter days where you feel like getting out of the house, but you don’t really want a big complicated day?
This is perfect for that.
A ferry ride from Sorrento to Queenscliff is one of those simple little Mornington Peninsula pleasures that we probably don’t do often enough. It feels like a mini holiday, but without the packing, airport queues or long drive. Jump onto the Searoad Ferries website to check out the timetable and events.
Just rug up, grab a coffee, head down to Sorrento and let the bay do the rest.
There’s something quite beautiful about the ferry in winter. The water looks a little moodier, the coastline feels calmer, and it has that lovely “slow down and breathe” feeling about it. You can sit inside where it’s warm, watch the view through the windows, or step outside for a few minutes if you’re feeling brave.
Right now there are whales heading north on their migration.... so you might even see a sneaky whale if they come through the heads into the Bay! This is of course not guaranteed, but there have been some lucky sightings in the past! Our gorgeous families of dolphins can also be seen frolicking in the waves as the ferry sails past!
And the best part? You don’t need to over-plan it.
Once you arrive in Queenscliff, you can have a wander through the village, stop somewhere cosy for lunch, browse the shops, or simply enjoy being somewhere different for a few hours. Then you hop back on the ferry and come home again.
It’s a lovely day out for couples, friends, visiting family, grandparents with the grandkids, or anyone who just needs a change of scenery.
It’s also a great reminder of why living on the Mornington Peninsula is so special. We have these beautiful little adventures right on our doorstep — the sort of things that make everyday life feel a bit more enjoyable.
And for anyone thinking about downsizing, this is often part of the bigger picture. It’s not just about moving to a smaller home. It’s about creating a lifestyle that gives you more freedom, more ease and more time to enjoy days like this.
Less time maintaining the big house.
More time getting out for coffee, fresh air, ferry rides and easy local adventures.
So if you’re looking for something simple to do this winter, put this one on the list. Take the ferry from Sorrento to Queenscliff, enjoy the bay, have a wander, and make a day of it.
Sometimes the best outings are the easy ones.
Local tip
Check the ferry timetable before you go, and have a look at any current seniors or winter offers. A weekday trip can be a lovely quieter option if you prefer to avoid the weekend crowds.
