Coastrek Mornington Peninsula 2026: A Winter Walking Adventure Worth Training For
There’s something pretty special about rugging up, pulling on your walking shoes and seeing the Mornington Peninsula coastline in a completely different season.
While summer gets plenty of attention, May is one of those beautiful months where the Peninsula feels a little calmer, a little moodier and, in many ways, even more magical. Think fresh coastal air, clifftop views, bush trails, wild ocean outlooks and a good excuse to get outdoors with friends.
And this May, there’s one event that brings all of that together beautifully — Coastrek Mornington Peninsula 2026.
Coastrek is happening on Friday 22 May 2026, offering participants the choice of a 20km, 30km or 50km hiking adventure across some of the most spectacular parts of the Mornington Peninsula. The event supports Beyond Blue, with participants hiking for mental health while raising funds and awareness.
Coastrek is not your average walk in the park.
It’s a team hiking challenge where people come together to walk, train, laugh, encourage each other and take on a meaningful outdoor adventure. It’s about fitness, friendship, fresh air and supporting mental health.
For the 2026 Mornington Peninsula event, participants can choose from three distances:
50km — Cape Schanck to Point Nepean
30km — Point Nepean loop
20km — Sorrento to Point Nepean
All routes finish at beautiful Point Nepean, one of the Peninsula’s most iconic coastal locations.
The longer the walk, the more coastline you get to experience — from clifftops and coastal bush trails to wild ocean views and quieter bays.
The Mornington Peninsula is made for this kind of adventure.
You don’t have to go far to feel like you’ve escaped somewhere special. One minute you’re walking through coastal scrub, the next you’re looking out over Bass Strait or standing near historic Point Nepean, taking in views that remind you why people love this part of Victoria so much.
Coastrek captures that feeling beautifully.
It’s active without being competitive. Challenging without being intimidating. Social without being too formal. And it gives locals and visitors a reason to experience the Peninsula beyond the usual cafés, beaches and wineries.
Of course, those are still great rewards after the walk.
Hiking for mental health
One of the things that makes Coastrek more than just a scenic walk is the cause behind it.
In 2026, Coastrekkers will be hiking to support Beyond Blue, helping raise funds and awareness for mental health. Coastrek describes the event as a way to support mental, physical and social wellbeing through training, connection and time in nature.
And really, that makes sense.
Most of us know how much better we can feel after a walk, a chat with a friend, or time away from screens and everyday pressure. Coastrek brings all of that together in a bigger, more purposeful way.
It’s not just about reaching the finish line. It’s about the training, the team, the fresh air and the reminder that getting outside can do a lot of good.
Do you need to be super fit?
Not necessarily — but you do need to prepare.
A 20km walk is still a decent challenge. A 30km hike takes commitment. And 50km is something you’ll definitely want to train for properly.
The good news is Coastrek is designed as a team challenge, not a race. Participants walk in teams of two or more, so there’s support built into the event from the start.
If you’re thinking about joining, now is the time to start building up your walking distance. Begin with local tracks, then gradually increase the length and difficulty of your walks.
Some great local training ideas include:
- Mornington to Mills Beach coastal walk
- The Briars walking trails in Mount Martha
- Cape Schanck boardwalk and surrounding trails
- Point Nepean National Park
- Balcombe Estuary Boardwalk
- Bushrangers Bay walk
Even if you’re not participating in Coastrek itself, it’s a great reminder to get outside and enjoy more of what’s right here on our doorstep.
Make a weekend of it
For visitors, Coastrek is also a lovely excuse to turn the event into a Mornington Peninsula weekend.
You could walk on the Friday, then spend the rest of the weekend recovering with a slow breakfast, a winery lunch, a hot springs visit, a wander through Sorrento or a relaxed coffee in Mornington Main Street.
For locals, it’s a reminder that adventure doesn’t always require a long drive or a plane ticket. Sometimes it’s already sitting right here — along the coastline, through the national parks and across the walking tracks we often mean to visit more often.
Events like Coastrek bring energy, visitors and community spirit to the Mornington Peninsula during a quieter time of year.
May can sometimes feel like that in-between month — summer is gone, winter is arriving, and people start spending more time indoors. Coastrek changes that.
It encourages people to rug up, get moving and reconnect with the landscape. It also supports local businesses, from cafés and accommodation providers to restaurants, retailers and tourism operators.
And from a lifestyle point of view, it highlights something locals already know: the Mornington Peninsula isn’t just a summer destination. It’s a year-round place to live, explore and enjoy.
